HISTORY: THE ESSEX STREET MARKET

The Essex Market is a historic public food market dating back to the administration of Fiorello LaGuardia. Created in 1940, the Essex Market originally served as a new place for pushcart and street merchants to do business. Today, the Market is home to more than 35 vendors who both serve and reflect the diverse community that makes up the Lower East Side. Neighborhood residents value the rich cultural, historical, and culinary traditions of our community which have been embodied by market merchants since its inception.

ESMVA: TODAY & TOMORROW

In 2019, the Market moved to an expanded state-of-the-art facility that is the cornerstone of the transformative Essex Crossing redevelopment. ESMVA was expressly created to advocate for vendor needs and coordinate support services, marketing initiatives, events, and programming. ESMVA is the central point of contact between market management, partner organizations as well as other governmental and community stakeholders.
